Essential Tips for Learner Drivers from Online Driving Tuition

Talking through your worries.

A few weeks prior to the practical Driving test I always ask my pupils if they have any concerns or worries about their driving and the test.

When asked about any worries to do with their driving prior to the test one of my pupils said that they still couldn’t do their manoeuvres.

So I asked my learner a series of questions.

First I asked them if they could do the reverse park and forward park in a carpark and the pull up and park on the right. They answered yes it was the reverse park in the road they couldn’t do. So by asking the right question we had already reduced the areas of worry by 75%.

Next I asked could they control the speed of the car and still do quick steering whilst carrying out effective observation? They answered yes.

Finally I asked if they could judge the distance to the kerb. They answered no!

So we had now identified the actual concern. We then discussed this element of the manoeuvre and agreed that although they didn’t always judge this perfectly they didn’t hit the kerb. Instead they would stop the car and then drive forward and then backwards adjusting the cars position to leave it near the kerb.

Having talked through their worries I could remind that that as long as this was done safely and under control, it would only result in one driving fault!

This greatly reduced their worries and concerns, and helped them to go on and pass their driving test first time.

So try it yourself. Analyse exactly what you are really worried about, it really does help to reduce your driving test nerves.

Good luck with your driving test.

Should I learn to drive now or later?

Should I learn to drive now or later?

As a DVSA ADI, I am often asked by parents and potential learners (17-18-year-olds) whether they are best to learn to drive now or should they wait until they are older? Possibly when they have returned from college or university. There are numerous questions for the potential learner to consider before deciding what is best for them, learn now or later?

The main questions in my experience are. Does the potential learner need their driving licence now?

Should the learner wait to learn to drive until they actually need their driving licence?

The costs involved in learning to drive and whether or not these can be afforded at the moment?

Will the learner be able to afford the car insurance when they pass their driving test?

Whilst there is no simple answer to the above, as everyone’s situation is different, let’s look at some of the answers to these questions.

UK Driving Test Centres Pass Limits.

As an Approved Driving Instructor since 1996, I’m very used to being asked certain questions regarding the driving test. One of those regularly asked questions is can driving examiners only pass a certain number of driving tests a week? This is a question I can remember asking my driving instructor some 29 years ago. I could just answer this with a simple yes or no, however, that would lead to a very short article and may not completely convince you. So let’s look at some facts.
