Theory Test Advice UK

The UK Theory Test comprises of two elements, Multiple-choice questions and a Hazard Perception Test. Both parts must be passed to obtain a theory test pass.
Multiple-Choice Questions.
The multiple-choice section consists of 50 questions, and must be completed within 57 minutes.
The questions cover a range of topics related to driving and will include questions on traffic signs, signals, rules, and safe driving practices.
You will need to answer at least 43 questions correctly to pass this element.
The multiple-choice questions used in the UK theory test are based on information found in the following 3 books:
- The Highway Code
- Know your traffic signs
- Driving – the essential skills
You can use these books as the basis of your study for the Multiple-Choice element of the Theory Test, or you can use one of the many Apps available such as the DVSA’s own app (Android or Apple).

Hazard Perception Test.
The hazard perception section consists of 14 video clips, each about one minute long, showing a variety of different driving situations.
You will need to identify developing hazards as they appear in each clip by clicking a mouse button. You can score up to five points for each hazard, depending on how quickly you identify it.
The pass mark for this element is 44 out of 75.
As with the multiple choice questions element there are various apps or online courses to help you prepare and practice for the test.
